Sam, a newly graduated pyschiatrist, and his fiance Alex move to Los Angeles for Sam's residency. Their new home is Sam's mother's house in upscale Laurel Canyon, which they expect to have all to themselves. But Sam's mother is still there, finishing up a record she's producing for the band of her new boy toy, Ian. Keeping with the rocker stereotype, the mother and band members spend more time smoking pot and drinking than actually working. Alex doesn't mind and tries to keep her focus on her work (she's writing a dissertation on genomics), but Sam is quite upset about the living situation. Eventually, Alex soon finds herself distracted by the rock-'n-roll lifestyle going on around her and starts wanting to experiment with more things. Meanwhile, Sam is equally distracted by the beautiful Israeli intern Sara.
